Modernizing Privacy Impact Assessments: Why PIAs Matter and How Digital Management Can Reduce Risk
As Ontario municipalities introduce new programs and digital services, managing privacy risk has become increasingly important — particularly with the growing use of AI-enabled technologies. Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) are widely recognized as a best practice for identifying and addressing privacy risks associated with the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and protection of personal information. When privacy risks are not identified early, issues can sometimes escalate beyond internal operations and become matters of public concern, media attention, and reputational impact for municipalities.
In this webinar, Shaun McIver, CEO of Vayle, will discuss why Privacy Impact Assessments play a critical role in strong municipal privacy programs, outline practical PIA best practices, and highlight common challenges municipalities face when managing PIAs through manual, document-based processes. Privacy issues that are not identified and addressed early can, and sometimes have, led to public complaints, media attention, and regulatory scrutiny for public-sector organizations. The session will include a live demonstration of digital PIA management, showing how a structured, workflow-driven approach can help municipalities improve consistency, collaboration across departments, and oversight, while supporting more informed and defensible decision-making.
