LAS' First Business and Data Analytics Intern

By Edward Kwan

As I wrap up my fall co-op internship at LAS, I reflect on the wonderful few months and the amount of work achieved. As the second intern of LAS and the organization’s very first Business and Data Analytics intern, it was a special experience for me as this was my first office job. After a few years of school, I was looking forward to doing a co-op term to change things up a bit. However, a year and a half into the pandemic, we were still working and learning in a remote and virtual environment. Thankfully, LAS and its dynamic team had adapted to remain fully operational to give me a great experience.

During my placement, I am glad to say that I accomplished quite a bit and I learned a lot. I worked on several projects helping to operationalize LAS’ Data Management Strategy. This included working on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), helping with program review, and making sure program information was complete. I also got to analyze communication statistics. My training at Seneca prepared me well for this job. The Excel courses at school helped me build a strong foundation, while LAS gave me the opportunity to apply and grow as I progressed through my role. It was a win-win for all.

After only three days on the job, I was fortunate to be invited to a Board of Directors’ meeting where I learned how the Board works with staff to make sure it serves the municipal sector well. For the December Board of Directors’ meeting, I was given the opportunity to present my work. I was particularly pleased and proud to hear that the information provided was valuable, insightful, and eye-opening for them.

Working with the LAS Team was rewarding. My teammates, Tanner and Christian, were really welcoming. In fact, the entire staff was ready to help whenever I had questions.  Management provided great mentorship through their patience, understanding and guidance. The experience exposed me to the tremendous amount of work that the team does and showed me the significant and important services provided by LAS.

In addition to the hands-on experience, I had the opportunity to attend a few training events, which further broadened my knowledge outside of the data piece; these included the Risk Management Symposium and Indigenous Training.

I have truly enjoyed my time at LAS and AMO. I learned a lot. Thank you to the LAS and AMO team for welcoming and supporting me throughout my time. Wishing the team all the best.
